| P1101 Always on - Device Unified Services (DUS) | Project Leader: Tanh van Do, NT Project
Supervisor: |
The project will design and develop a prototype for a DUS (Device Unify Service). The DUS will aim to exploit the characteristics of AO and provide access to online services from multiple devices (e.g. phone, PDA, PC, TV, etc) and from any location. This prototype will then be examined in user trials to understand the commercial and usability implications. The DUS Prototype will be implemented as a Service on an open platform in an IP environment emulating the concept of the VHE (Virtual Home Environment). DUS is a commercial service of great value for Mobile operators or Mobile Service providers since it provide a much user-friendly interface for their customers. DUS has also value for fixed network operator or service provider since it provides bridging between fixed and mobile devices. DUS can be offered by a Service Provider without them necessarily having their own infrastructure. In the Technological point of view DUS has unmeasurable values since it provides opportunity to integrate and experiment with major technologies together, such as IP, wireless communications, agent concepts, Bluetooth, etc. The output will enable the EURESCOM shareholders to boost their future revenues from new broadband services |
| P1102 Mobile electronic commerce |
Project Leader: Andreas Böhm, DT Project Supervisor: |
The technology which allows electronic commerce on mobile devices is already available, and further developments are happening at fast pace. However, application fields and business models are still immature. This project will investigate the m-commerce market and produce business models and service scenarios which will help EURESCOM shareholders to gain a lead in this field. The key-technologies and methods for m-commerce (cHTML, WML, IP, WAP, MExE and JMDK) will be investigated. Furthermore, a platform concept allowing creation and deployment of new m-commerce services will be developed. |
| P1103 Inter-Operator IP QoS Framework - ToIP and UMTS Case Studies |
Project Leader: Niamh Quinn, TI Project Supervisor: Valerie Blavette |
Currently, there is strong technical and market pressure to develop and migrate PSTN, IP and mobile services onto a converged IP network spanning multiple operators networks. This project will address the challenge of designing a common inter-operator IP QoS provisioning framework capable of delivering differentiated service quality to IP based services like Telephony over IP (ToIP) or UMTS packet data services. Cost models and business models for Managed QoS services will be analysed. Requirements regarding the main service management processes (SLA negotiation and provisioning, accounting and billing) will also be identified. |
| P1104 MUST - MUltimodal, multilingual information Services with small mobile Terminals
|
Project Leader: Elisabeth den Os, NL Project Supervisor: |
This project deals with combining speech and language technologies to enable user-friendly multimodal and multilingual services for small mobile devices. Because of the small keyboards the terminal devices require a mix of input technologies, one of which is speech recognition, that will be combined with Natural Language Understanding. Because of the small size of the screen, advanced output technologies are needed to render the information in a condensed form. EURESCOM shareholders will get insight in the possibilities of combining speech and language technologies for future multilingual and multimodal services for generic mobile terminals, giving them a competitive advantage in the field of mobile Internet services. |
| P1105 MobilUS: next generation Mobile Information Services on UMTS |
Project Leader: Josip Zoric, NT Project Supervisor: |
The upcoming introduction of UMTS will open the way for a whole new generation of multimedia and information intensive mobile services. The project will investigate in concepts for research and development of UMTS based information intensive services that support nomadic work and life styles. The project will deliver an overview of UMTS services together with techniques supporting them; an architecture for UMTS service deployment; a prototype implementation of the architecture and an evaluation of UMTS nomadic usage scenarios and applications on such an architecture. EURESCOM Shareholders will gain early experience with information intensive mobile services to enable implementation of these services as soon as UMTS has reached the right penetration level. They will also be able to support the rapidly growing market of nomadic business workers, and thus will strengthen their position in the attractive business market. |
| P1106 E-commerce Impacts on Service and Network Operations and Management |
Project Leader:
David Milham, BT Project Supervisor: |
Current practice for the automation of telecommunications Service and Network Management (S&NM) has focussed on the use of telecom and IT platform technologies. Experience to date is limited to Web based front ends to deliver services to end customers. However new telecommunications business models require more complex supply chains and the benefits of e-commerce cannot be realised without major changes to the way S&NM systems themselves are operating. This project will assess the impact of e-commerce methods and technologies by studying business and process models and relationships with the actors involved. It will develop a new e-commerce framework for S&NM OSS that provides a reference in terms of organisations and systems for building S&NM solutions, covering fulfilment (provisioning), assurance (management, operations) and billing processes in the new e-commerce environment. This framework should allow for projected future requirements and emerging technologies. Studies of existing products and available technologies will be done through interaction with vendors. |
| P1107 IP-V irtual Private Networks |
Project Leader: Jorge Carapinha, PT Project
Supervisor: |
The IP-based VPN (IP-VPN) has emerged as one of most promising concepts for network providers because of the expected dramatic growth of service demand. However, so far, the IP-VPN concept has been shaped mainly by vendors. The widespread deployment of IP-VPNs has been delayed by the lack of interoperable implementations and confusion over the high number of solutions that are described by the term IP-VPN. The goal of this project is to permit interoperable and flexible IP-VPN implementations. Studies will focus on Architectures, Security (e.g. IP multicast encryption for IPSec, topic not addressed by standardization yet) and QoS (taking advantage in particular of MPLS technology). |
| P1108 Workflow-based on-line validation of complex component based Internet services |
Project Leader: Giuseppe Valetto, IT Project Supervisor: |
Off-line, pre-deployment validation techniques have become integral part of service development. However, due to the pressure of the time-to-market window in the Internet era, their use is often omitted. A move towards continual on-line validation of deployed component-based services can provide significant advantages and reduce the cost of service development and maintenance. This project will define a set of capabilities necessary to achieve effective on-line validation of value-added and mission-critical services and will experiment with infrastructure-level technologies to demonstrate workflow-based on-line validation techniques. It is within the business objectives to accumulate know-how in the field of on-line continual service validation and to understand the associated processes and their relationships and implications with respect to other processes, such as development, deployment, management and operation. Furthermore it will try to quantify potential business benefits versus risks and will define guidelines for innovative business models based upon on-line validation benefits and enabling factors. |
| P1109 Next Generation Networks: the service offering standpoint
|
Project Leader: Carlo A. Licciardi, IT Project Supervisor: |
Next-generation networks are getting increasing attention as they offer many opportunities for operators (e.g. reduction of costs, greater service portfolio etc.). While there is a lot of work focusing on the switching and transport layer (e.g. softswitch developments), questions related to service provisioning have been disregarded. This project will assess the Next Generation Network approach with respect to its potential for service provisioning. For this, Call Agent type of products will be evaluated and service development demonstrated in a testing environment. Furthermore, an open software platform for value added services on top of Softswitch and Call Agent will be defined and assessed. |
| P1110 Open Service Access: Advantages and opportunities in service provisioning on 3G Mobile Networks |
Project Leader: Oddvar Risnes, NT Project Supervisor: |
The success of 3G mobile networks will heavily depend on the ability to provide added-value services to customers. Standardisation is already defining relevant interfaces between applications and network, based on the Open Service Access (OSA) concept. The Parlay Group is one of the main contributors. This project will investigate and enhance OSA specifications to enable innovative services in 3G mobile networks (and in a shorter term in GSM/GPRS networks). This will include the evaluation of OSA-based products and demonstration of service development. The business benefits of an open software platform for value added services for TelCos will be assessed. |
| P1111 Next-Gen Open Service Solutions over IP (N-GOSSIP) |
Project Leader: Pekka Nieminen, AF Project Supervisor: |
SIP is becoming a key technology enabler for Next Generation Services. SIP technology still has to solve a number of issues before it can be widely deployed in European networks. The main goal of the Project is to demonstrate the feasibility of constructing and deploying new telecommunications services over IP networks using open SIP solutions. For this, SIP technology will be assessed and SIP based products will be evaluated. Service development will be demonstrated on an open service platform, which will be accessed by heterogeneous terminals e.g. multimedia PC, PDA and IP phones. Personal and service mobility, multimedia, any to any and multiparty communication is planned. |
| P1112 NEW DIMENSIONS - NEtWork DIMENSIONing baSed on modeling of internet traffic |
Project Leader: Sverrier Olafsson, BT Project Supervisor: |
This project will generate a methodological framework for analysing the performance of Web based services over the Internet/Intranets by identifying the set of all variables which impact on network and Web server performance and understanding the statistics of them. It will look into the interrelationships between the performance variables and will study by the use of quantitative models how the overall performance of the network depends on them. From the quantitative and simulation analysis it will derive practical design methods for network dimensioning. The simulation outputs will be validated against traffic measurement data. To support this, the project will keep track of traffic data and its evolution within advanced networks, such as the IST Ipv6 and US Abilene network. |
| P1113 The Tsunami IPv6 Project |
Project Leader: André Zehl, DT Project Supervisor: |
Although basic features of IPv6 have been tested and deployed in various experimental/trial networks, there is little experience of some of the newer features of IPv6 (Addressing, DNS, Mobile IP, Network Security etc.) This project will practically evaluate these new features in an operational multi-provider environment. The goal is to identify technical issues for the deployment of new IPv6 features and to define strategies towards the provision of new IPv6 specific Internet services for large Service Providers in a European context. Sample applications for such ISP services will be demonstrated. |
| P1114 MC-A-RONI MultiCast Deployment - A pRactical handbOok for Networks and Isps
|
Project Leader: Nicolai Leymann, DT Project Supervisor: |
IP-Multicast over MPLS is a hot issue and several vendors have proprietary solutions for it. The main benefit of this project is to come up with a strategy how IP-Multicast can be integrated into MPLS based networks and to provide a solution for this process. Additionally it will be looked into high speed access technologies like ADSL to offer high quality multicast services. Accounting and billing of those services are required to offer new services and are therefore a main topic of the project. As Reliable Multicast is becoming an important technology to transmit data between Web-Servers and Caches we also need to understand which kind of support is needed from the underlying network and how this can be realised and integrated. The impact of Reliable Multicast on network performance will be studied. The project will use the results from P1010 (RealCast) as input. |
| P1115 SALTAMONTES - Selected Quality of Services Provision in a Multi Protocol Label Switching/Differentiated Services Internet
|
Project Leader: Hans Joachim Einsiedler, DT Project Supervisor: |
SALTAMONTES will study and evaluate issues related to Quality of Service (QoS), as implemented by the Differentiated Services approach and Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS). The project will focus on the migration concept of IP networks towards the use of MPLS, MPLS based enhanced IP services, and MPLS interoperability. |
| P1116 SCORPION - Scalable Optical IP Transport Networks |
Project Leader: Anjali Bhatnagar, NT Project Supervisor: |
The SCORPION project aims to combine the functionality of the Internet Protocol, the Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology, and the emerging Optical Transport Network. The project will provide an understanding of how protection and restoration can be achieved in a network combining the functionality of IP, generalised MPLS (GMPLS) and OTN. It will define a common control plane for the dynamic provisioning of network resources utilising GMPLS technology, and evaluate its performance. Furthermore, the project will provide an understanding of how routing of a diversified set of traffic classes can be achieved in a combined IP, GMPLS and OTN network, providing the required service quality to individual as well as aggregated traffic streams. It will define a future reference network architecture that utilises the combined functionality of IP, GMPLS and OTN, and scales well globally, and that copes well with the ever increasing demand for bandwidth. Finally, the project will Identify a migration path from the current network situation towards the future reference network. |
| P1117 FAN - Future Access Networks |
Project Leader: Marcelino Pousa, PT Project Supervisor: |
The aim of this project is to evaluate the impact of the use of IP over different Layer 1 technologies like ADSL, SDSL, VDSL, PONs, broadband radio, etc., considering aspects like: cost; service requirements; QoS guarantee; operation and maintenance; impact on the network architecture; interworking with the core network; security; network evolution. The project will produce a set of basic guidelines and deployment criteria to support the transition from the present access networks towards the future IP based broadband access networks. Results will support operators in exploiting emerging access technologies (e.g. Gigabit Ethernet), and will be able to assess the impact of their choice in the future network development. The project will provide an opportunity to operators to share experience and to arrive to a consensus and thus be able to influence equipment suppliers and standardisation by creating conditions that enable high volume production and the corresponding reduction of costs. |
| P1118 Bluetooth Access: A promising Access Technology to Ubiquitous Computing Services
|
Project Leader: Josef Noll, NT Project Supervisor: |
Bluetooth is identified as the common standard for wireless, device independent connection between all kind of customer devices as e.g. mobile phones, PDA, cameras, and computers. There is widespread backing for Bluetooth from mobile equipment manufacturers. The project aims at designing a platform which allows users with Bluetooth enabled devices to securely access advanced services in public places. It should also identify which services can be offered to users via this platform, and which are the most profitable/likely service scenarios for TelCos to target. Some of these services will be prototypically implemented. Business models for these scenarios will be investigated. |
| P1119 The Third Dimension - Human-Centred Approache to Designing New Mobile Services for Different Terminal Equipment |
Project Leader: Tore Syversen, NT |
Usually mobile devices and other terminal devices are studied according to their technical and/or software functions; the end users and their requirements are rarely taken into account. Studying the usability of mobile terminal equipment and their main services is something that needs to be done in order to establish basic rules or guidelines for developing mobile services in general. The project consists of a selected set of usability experiments with real people in real (or simulated) context of use. |
| P1141 INRA Issues associated with the implementation of ITU E.353 International Network Routing Addresses in public networks |
Project Leader: Gerd Wiedenhaupt, DT Project Supervisor: |
The ITU proposal is to separate customer naming from addressing of network elements for routing purposes. The basis for this is draft ITU-T Recommendation E.353. Today E.164 numbers are used for both: naming and routing. Any change to the use of E.164 numbers as routeing numbers will incur costs, and therefore needs to be justified against predetermined but not yet defined criteria. The impacts on the signalling, routeing, billing & accounting, interconnection, number portability and network boundaries will be investigated. |
| P1142 Biosciences and ICT - Two worlds growing together |
Project Leader: Richard Tateson, BT Project Supervisor: |
Both ICT and biotechnology are areas of growing impact on our society and of increased business interest. We are probably not far away until the two areas will converge. The companies which have profound strategies available in an early stage will have big competitive advantages. This explorative study intends to develop scenarios on future usage of combined molecular, biological and ICT systems, and to provide solutions how these systems could be applied to telecommuications. Visions of the future include brain implants, human machine symbiosis (cyborgs), smart prosthesis, molecular computing, molecular nanotechnology, genetic manipulation of natural systems, etc. |
| P1143 Perspectives for future work on IP QoS issues |
Project Leader: Terje Jensen, NT Project Supervisors: |
For IP-based services harmonised, commercial QoS solutions are not available from any operator yet (except to a limited extent within single-operator domains). "Commercial QoS solutions" are understood as a variety of QoS related activities, functionality from network and management point of view, applications, etc. The market seems to have arrived at a turning point with different options and directions. The forming question for this Study is: What QoS and related issues are to be asddressed (e.g. by EURESCOM projects) on short to medium term (i.e. the next 1-3 years) to enable the provision of commercial IP-based services with ensured QoS? |
| P1144 The future CAMERA - Customers and Markets EURESCOM Research Activities
|
Project Leader: Annakaisa Häyrynen, AF Project Supervisor: |
Knowledge of customers and markets, in particular their needs, behaviour and value systems, is essential in designing new applications and service portfolios. Despite competition amongst market players EURESCOM projects have demonstrated that economic, user centredness and cross-cultural issues can be successfully addressed by EURESCOM provided the scope and orientation is clearly defined. This Study proposes to identify customers and markets collaborative research activities which give competitive advantages to Shareholders. |
| P1145 4G - the next frontier |
Project Leader: Josef Noll, NT Project Supervisor: |
Third generation mobile systems have now left the research domain. Whilst according to current plans first 3G networks will be deployed from mid 2001 onwards, the development of business models, applications, services and appropriate terminal equipment is still going on at network operators, service providers and terminal suppliers. To not lose momentum system suppliers and vendors are now turning to next generation mobile systems. The network operators and service providers should match these initiatives by outlining their visions for a seamless evolution of mobile systems and identify areas where future research from their perspective are necessary. |
| P1146 GOLD Getting OnLine communities to Develop |
Project Leader: Debrah DiDuca, BT Project Supervisor: 12 - 13 June 2001
|
The growth of online communities has not as yet been predictable, i.e. some communities have failed to attract a sustainable user base, whilst other communities have flourished. The theory behind project the former EURESCOM project P902 stated that people would use different communication tools depending on the types of relationship that they were engaged in and the stage of learning they had reached. This Study aims to further our knowledge of how communities develop, by examining communication patterns within TelCos using questionnaires to determine relationship types and stages, and using logging software to examine tool use. |
| P1147 DIRECT - The potential of peer-to-peer interaction |
Project Leader: Michael Matzeit, DT Project Supervisor: |
Peer-to-peer
computing can be described as a class of applications that takes advantage of resources
available at the edges of the Internet. Peer-to-peer computing allows the development of
services without using a (logical) central server, but using communications between a
"federation" of equals. Recently, a computing infrastructure (i. e. protocols
and applications) has been introduced that enables this computing and communication
paradigm. |
| P1148 EXACT - EXploring ACTual ICT users and markets data |
Project Leader: Ben Anderson, BT Project Supervisor: |
EURESCOM project P903 was dealing with ICT uses in everyday life. It has performed a big survey and extensive analysis with focus on Internet and mobile service use and behaviour. The results are very important for making strategic decisions on ICT services and products, and for analysing the market and users situations. The study further explores European ICT markets and users and will deal with the following main issues: What analyses beyond those performed by P903 work are deemed necessary? What should future EURESCOM involvement in "P903 type" projects be? How can members of the EURESCOM community best position themselves for starting bigger joint activities in this area (particularly in front of the EC FP6)? How can such research be self funding or even be profitable? |
| P1149 Impacts of emerging software techniques on telecommu- nication services
|
Project Leader: Sune Jakobsson, NT Project Supervisor: |
Recently the Object Management Group (OMG) started an initiative to provide a solid framework that frees system infrastructures to evolve in response to a never-ending parade of platforms, while preserving and leveraging existing technology investments. This initiative is called the Model Driven Architecture (MDA). Currently it is not clear how the MDA will impact the way telecommunication operators will design, specify and operate their systems if they choose to do so under the MDA umbrella. This short study was launched to clarify the uncertainty with respect to telecommunications requirements and will prove - or disprove - the promises made by the OMG MDA. Furthermore, it is among the objectives of the short study, to ensure that the further evolution of the MDA will reflect the specific needs of telecommunications systems and services. |
| P1150 E-voting - Opportunities and Challenges for Network Operators |
Project Leader: Jari Oja, AF Project Supervisor: |
E-voting could become an interesting and challenging business opportunity for operators. However, a number of technical, legal, social and political issues need to be investigated and solutions need to be found before a broader introduction is possible. The study will focus in particular in e-voting service scenarios, describe business cases and investigate in secure platforms and network architectures. The aim of the study is to prepare the ground for later experimentation, modeling and simulation of e-voting. |
| P1151 Security Aspects of DSL Always-On Services |
Project Leader: Spiros Alexiou, OG Project Supervisor: |
The emerging of always-on connections will raise security concerns. In case of always-on services networks and terminal devices will be permanently exposed to a potential attack. Furthermore, they could also be used to launch attacks against other computers in the absence of proper protection. The study will focus on the security implications of AO-access by using ADSL technologies and it will provide recommendations, which actions should be taken for future research or experiments. |
