Health risk assessment of the effects of radio-frequency electromagnetic fields

The International Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) has set threshold values to limit the emissions from radio-frequency sources. According to the current state of scientific knowledge considered in setting these exposure limits, any harmful effects of radio-frequency electromagnetic fields (EMF) on human health can be excluded. Nevertheless, there is considerable concern on the part of some biomedical scientists, within certain legal jurisdictions and within the general public that potential effects on health could occur even at field intensities below these threshold limits. These concerns apply particularly to the current and new digital radio technologies.

What are the main objectives of this Project?

• Elaborate the technical concept for the extraction of information contained in publications, exploiting the databases “MEDLINE/PubMed” and “EMF database”,
• Implement and verify the above concept,
• Carry out a review of the most significant scientific literature entries on potential effects of radio-frequency EMF on the induction/promotion of cancer and on the existence of subjective symptoms, both of which presently play a key role in the biomedical science community, and in the “Electrosmog” debate in the media and within the general public,
• Investigate, by means of computer simulations, adequate scaling techniques for estimating the whole-body and partial-body exposure of humans in radio-frequency EMF, applicable to individuals with different body height and mass.

The tool to be prepared will use the databases “MEDLINE/PubMed” and “EMF database” for the planned surveys.
