What is this Project about?

Customers are increasingly becoming accustomed to wireless technologies in the public and corporate space. Many of the same technologies are also gradually appearing in the residential market. Home networking has long been a topic of much research and development, but due to proprietary and / or too expensive solutions, it has not achieved wide spread acceptance in the market. The combination of broadband connections to customers’ homes and low cost wireless technologies is believed to change all that.

This project will investigate how wireless networking technologies (Bluetooth, 802.11, Hiperlan, DVB) can be deployed to make full use of broadband connections to the homes. Potential services will include remote control functionality, personal radio, video and community services ("information for family members"). These services can be made personal through the use of profiles in the "intelligent wireless home".

Emphasis will be put on how operators can offer new revenue generating services to users, combining broadband access and advanced wireless home networking for infotainment, security, remote home management and customer care applications as well as exploring aspects of "open access policies" for all customers.

What are the main objectives of this Project?

Create a vision of the future home and wireless services in the home environment including application scenarios and user requirements

Evaluate current and emerging wireless technologies and investigate how these technologies can be used together with broadband network access to enable new services

Elaborate how the mobile phone will interact with the broadband wireless home and provide value added services for the user

Identify methods for service integration in case of service delivery over different access networks and to different terminals

Draw technical requirements on Residential Gateway products

Draw operator requirements for remote management of home networking platform

Design and implement a prototype demonstrator to illustrate the service examples for these broadband wireless services.

What relationship exists to other organisations or bodies?

This project will look at the standards from the operator’s point of view and ensure that the applications of these technologies which can lead to increased revenue for the operator are enabled by subsequent releases of the standards.

Therefore Feedback can be given to the relevant standards bodies, e.g. OSGi, IEEE, Bluetooth SIG, etc.
