Abstract:

This document is the report of Eurescom P1241 strategic study, which focuses on Cooltown like architectures and telecom networks.

Our overall conclusion is that the combination of ad-hoc (or ubiquitous, in the context of this work) and global services and networks has considerable synergies. Fundamentally, there are major potential global network and service revenues fired by ad-hoc network activity. It is necessary to engage now and to support ad-hoc initiatives. Significant ad-hoc-global networks and services developments will happen over the next two years.

From a business perspective, there is a huge but perhaps not immediately obvious opportunity.

Our research demonstrates that a single or few ad-hoc activities can generate considerable global traffic and global service access to the customer.

Based on the conclusions, we recommend to Telco’s:

  1. Provide activation/initiation/transfer mechanisms between Ad-hoc networks and Global networks - To make possible and stimulate the ad-hoc to global traffic.
  2. Encourage and provide consultancy for development of ad-hoc networks - to make possible and stimulate the ad-hoc to global traffic, and for consultancy revenue.
  3. Provide remote, bespoke customer, partner, network and service management support services and applications for Ad-hoc networks - in a win-win with customer to earn revenue providing best of breed services allowing the customer to focus their expertise on their customer.
  4. Provide Global m-commerce and e-commerce environment (billing, transaction systems, etc.) to include them in cross-networks (ad-hoc – global) service scenarios.
